Tips to stay healthy and positive while working from home

With the darker days drawing in and World Mental Health Day reminding us all to take care of ourselves, it’s the perfect time to check in on our mental well-being, especially when working from home. As the team at Root Fifty-Two, we’ve gathered some of our top tips for staying healthy – both physically and mentally – when working remotely. Or, if you prefer working in the office, then hopefully there are some takeaways you can gain too. Whether you’re a creative or simply someone navigating the home office life, we hope these tips help you stay on track.
Move your body, clear your mind
It’s easy to get stuck in one place when working from home, but regular movement can make a huge difference. Whether it’s a morning gym session, a lunchtime walk, or a quick stretch between meetings, moving your body helps clear your mind. One of our team members even says that their daily walk is non-negotiable, giving them time to reset and come back to work with fresh energy.
Eat well to feel well
We’ve all heard it before, but it’s true – what you eat has a big impact on how you feel. Try to choose healthier meals and snacks throughout the day.
And speaking of eating well, starting your day with a nutritious breakfast can set the tone for the rest of the day. Here’s a favourite recipe from Ella – quick, healthy, and delicious (the recipe that is, although we promise Ella is lovely too)!
Chia seed pudding recipe:
- 3 tablespoons chia seeds (soak in 2 tbsp water for 15 minutes)
- ⅓ cup milk of choice
- 1 tsp honey
- Pinch of cinnamon
- Protein powder (optional)
- Mix it all together, then add toppings like yoghurt and raspberries!
Limit screen time and phone use
The temptation to constantly check your phone or stare at your screen can be strong, but it’s important to take breaks. Swap some screen time for reading, listening to music, or getting outside. One team member makes it a point to avoid the news when feeling overwhelmed, and it’s helped maintain a more positive outlook.
Plan quality time for yourself and others
We’re all guilty of working through breaks or skipping time for ourselves, but planning moments to relax or connect with loved ones can really lift your mood. Whether it’s a holiday, a day out with family, or simply some “me time,” make it a priority. One of our team members journals on their work-from-home days, reflecting on their values and protecting what matters most.
Change up your environment
Working from the same spot every day can feel monotonous. If possible, switch things up! Maybe it’s working from a different room in the house or heading to a coffee shop for a change of scenery. Some of us here at Root Fifty-Two find that a change of environment gives a fresh perspective and boosts productivity.
Stay connected and just talk
Isolation can creep up when working from home, so don’t forget to reach out. Whether it’s a quick chat with a friend or a longer conversation with a loved one, staying connected helps prevent loneliness. Just talking – about anything – can go a long way in lifting your spirits.
Set boundaries and protect your space
Mental well-being often starts with setting boundaries. That might mean spending less time with negative people who bring you down or learning to say “no” to others’ problems that aren’t yours to carry. It’s okay to protect your peace.
Acts of kindness and giving back
One of the best ways to feel good is by doing good. Whether it’s helping a charity or simply carrying out an act of kindness, giving back can bring a sense of fulfilment and positivity into your life.
Start your day right
Working from home might be different from heading into the office, but keeping a routine can make a world of difference. Many of us still wake up at our usual time, get dressed, and follow our morning routines to create a sense of normalcy. For some, it’s even the perfect opportunity to add something extra, like journaling or exercising before diving into work.
Remember, it’s the small habits that can make the biggest difference. Whether it’s taking a walk, trying a new hobby, or being kind to yourself and others, it all adds up. World Mental Health Day is a great reminder that looking after your mental well-being is an ongoing process – one that starts with you.
